Website Advice for Small Irish Businesses

What Is llms.txt?

Search is changing.

For years, business owners mostly thought about Google in one simple way:

A person searches.

Google shows links.

The person opens a website.

Then they compare businesses.

That still happens.

But now Google can also show an AI Overview above normal search results when its systems decide that an AI-generated summary may be useful. Google describes AI Overviews as a Search feature that helps people understand information from a range of sources.

This changes the first step of search.

A potential customer may now see an AI answer before they click any website.

That means your website must be clear not only for people.

It also needs to be easy for Google and AI tools to understand.

One small part of that new SEO picture is a file called llms.txt.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a small text file placed on a website.
It usually sits here:
yourwebsite.ie/llms.txt

Its job is simple.
It gives AI tools a clear summary of the website.
It can explain:
  • what the business does;
  • which pages are most important;
  • what services the business offers;
  • where the FAQ is;
  • where case studies are;
  • which articles are useful;
  • what content should be read first.
It is not a normal website page for customers.
It is more like a short guide for AI systems.

A simple way to understand it

Imagine you give someone a folder with everything about your business.
There are service pages, blog posts, FAQs, case studies, contact details and old information.
You could let them figure it out alone.
Or you could give them a short note:
Start here.
These are the main services.
These are the important pages.
These are the proof pages.
These articles explain the topic.
This is what the business is really about.
That is the idea behind llms.txt.
It does not replace the website.
It helps explain the website.

Is llms.txt a Google ranking factor?

No clear claim should be made here.
Google says there are no special extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that normal SEO fundamentals still matter.
So llms.txt should not be sold as a magic ranking trick.
It is not.
A weak website will not become strong because one file was added.
But if a website already has good structure, clear service pages, useful FAQs and strong internal links, llms.txt can become another layer of clarity.
It helps present the site in a cleaner way for AI tools that may use or understand this format.

Why is this becoming important?

AI search is growing.
People now ask longer and more specific questions:
  • Who can upgrade a small business website in Ireland?
  • What should I check before rebuilding my website?
  • Why is my website not bringing enquiries?
  • What should a local service business website explain?
  • How much does a website upgrade usually involve?
These are not just keywords.
They are real questions.
AI tools are built to answer questions.
If your website answers those questions clearly, it has a better chance of being understood, summarised and considered useful.
llms.txt is part of this bigger direction: websites need to be easier for AI systems to read.

How can a website appear in Google AI answers?

There is no button that puts a website into an AI Overview.
Google chooses sources itself.
But a website can be prepared better.
The basics still matter:
  • the page must be indexable;
  • the content must be useful;
  • the service must be clearly explained;
  • important text should be visible on the page;
  • headings should describe the topic;
  • service pages should answer real customer questions;
  • internal links should connect related pages;
  • FAQ sections should be clear;
  • business details should be consistent;
  • schema markup should match the visible content;
  • the mobile version should be easy to use.
In simple terms, Google and AI systems need to understand:
Who are you?
What do you do?
Where do you work?
Who is the service for?
Why should the information be trusted?
Which page is the best answer?
That is not only technical SEO.
That is website structure.

Where llms.txt fits into SEO

llms.txt sits on top of normal SEO work.
It does not replace:
  • service pages;
  • clear headings;
  • internal links;
  • FAQ;
  • schema markup;
  • Google Business Profile;
  • case studies;
  • useful blog articles;
  • mobile structure;
  • fast loading pages.
It supports them.
The file can point AI tools towards the strongest parts of the website.
For a small business, that may include:
  • homepage;
  • main services;
  • location or service area pages;
  • FAQ;
  • case studies;
  • useful articles;
  • contact page.
The point is not to list everything.
The point is to show what matters most.

Why the website platform matters

Not every website platform gives proper control over technical files.
Some websites look fine on the surface, but the owner cannot easily manage important SEO elements.
That can become a problem.
If your platform does not allow llms.txt, you may also be limited in other areas:
  • technical SEO control;
  • structured data;
  • page structure;
  • redirects;
  • indexing settings;
  • internal linking;
  • future content growth.
Today, that may feel like a small issue.
But search is moving quickly.
If two businesses are similar, the better-prepared website has an advantage.
If one website has clear service pages, FAQ, internal links, schema markup and an llms.txt file, while the other website is closed, messy and hard to update, the first site is better prepared for AI-driven search.
That does not guarantee a top result.
But at equal strength, better structure gives the site a better chance.

What should be inside llms.txt?

For a small business website, the file should be simple.
It may include:
  • business name;
  • short business description;
  • main services;
  • important pages;
  • FAQ page;
  • case studies;
  • blog or knowledge base;
  • contact page;
  • notes about service area.
For example, a local service business may include:
  • Home;
  • Main Services;
  • Emergency Service;
  • Service Areas;
  • Recent Work;
  • FAQ;
  • Contact.
A website studio may include:
  • Home;
  • New Website Build;
  • Website Upgrade;
  • Website Growth Support;
  • Case Studies;
  • Blog;
  • FAQ;
  • Contact.
The file should match the real website.
It should not invent services or exaggerate what the business does.

When llms.txt will not help

llms.txt will not fix a weak website.
It will not help much if:
  • the site has almost no useful content;
  • the services are unclear;
  • important pages are missing;
  • there is no FAQ;
  • there are no internal links;
  • the mobile version is poor;
  • the website does not explain the business properly.
First, the site needs a proper base.
Then extra SEO layers make sense.

How Site Launch uses llms.txt

At Site Launch, I treat llms.txt as part of AI-ready SEO.
It is not a separate trick.
It belongs inside a wider website improvement process.
This can include:
  • checking if the website platform allows llms.txt;
  • reviewing the current site structure;
  • identifying the most important pages;
  • improving service pages;
  • adding useful FAQ sections;
  • improving internal links;
  • checking schema markup;
  • making business information clearer;
  • preparing or updating the llms.txt file;
  • keeping the file aligned with real website content.
The goal is simple.
The website should be easier to understand for people, Google and AI tools.

The main point

llms.txt is not magic.
It is a small file that helps explain a website to AI systems.
On its own, it will not bring enquiries.
But as part of a well-structured website, it can help prepare the business for how search is changing.
A modern website should not only look good.
It should be clear, structured, readable and ready for the way people now search.
That includes Google.
And increasingly, it includes AI.
